TOPIC: Smoking

Re:Smoking 24/07/2010 23:15
I liked the point you made Trev regarding your friend carrying the sofa. I think there are many things that we humans do that aren't good for us, smoking being one of them. It seems most people live pretty non-active lives, by that I mean, it's sit at the office, go to the pub, watch some TV go to bed. They can in some ways 'afford' to smoke because they aren't really doing anything where the effects of smoking become plain (aside from the coughing etc etc). I wonder if more people tried to really exercise or push themselves, they would be shocked at the effect smoking had had on them, and perhaps then they would say, as your friend 'what am I doing smoking?' and stop. But while they just live a life of no exertion then it seems most are happy to live with the effects of smoking.

Since quiting smoking I know I have found a new lease in life. I often see people who are limited physically, either through choice or circumstances, and it makes me appreciate what I have, and what I can do.

i thought what brown20 said was very good about forsaking all with reagrds to cold turkey.

i have taken a step in faith and quit smoking 100% now. no more cutting back.i am done.its a small thing but important to me.

Thanks for the awesome support I've been given and i also appreiacate there has been no condemnation.Just good stuff.

Hi Redyucca, congratulations on quitting smoking!! :-o
I hope you continue trying not to smoke.
Somebody used to tell my grandfather, (who used to smoke a lot) that if you feel like smoking and you don't you don't want to, you should drink a cup of water. Maybe you can try that and see if it can help!
After this you can try to convince your friends to stop, if they want, because it will help them.

Hi again Etoo

thanks for the comments.I'm feeling good abot my choice.dont know if my method was relly the greatest but tapering off seemed to woek for me.

i have a few freinds who smoke but its less popular than it used to be becase more people are understnding the health risks.lots of my friends are into sports and see the damage smoking can do to your game.even if its just playing for fun its not cool to be short of breath and coughing.

Its good so many public placs dont allow smoking now so less tempations to lite up.i think lots of people just smoked from habit when they had coffee of when they drink.

Now I am trying to work on my writing skills. :? Wish me pluck. (JOKING)

Peter

I've been praying for you, Peter. Hopefully you will hang in there and it will get easier as you go along.

And then we can start praying for you to get over eating too much (because all the food tastes so good now)! lol

Heh, I just made a post in reply to your question on the 'donate to the poor' thread, saying that it's not good to give money to feeding addictions. Then I read this thread and thought the same thing. If we don't agree with giving money to fund other people's addictions, then how can we agree with using moeny to fund our our addictions?

I used to smoke, but now I hardly ever think of having a cigarette, and I think occupying yourself with positive things to do is very helpful.

Bob

that is a great point and i thought of that too when I was replying to what Damien said about he gives money to those who want wine.I said better to give them a meal. Yet I did think at the very time about the stupid waster of my money i have been with my smoking habit but i pushed the feeling of being convicted out of my mind and buzzed into someone elses addiction.I'm glad I've stopped smoking now but its very right that feeding our own habit is not any differnt that someone else feeding theres. i think selfishly my reasoning would have been...its my money i earned it so i can spend it on what i want.whereas they are begging for handed out money.

but if everything we have is freely given over to God,if we view everything as his and should be used for his glory and for Gods work then my old reasoning was hypercrital and just wrong.

I didnt no how to word it but what you said it right.I wouldnt have the right to stand in judgement of anyone else as long as i am feeding my own addiction.and now that could even be indulging my taste for coke.the money i spend on coke is also selfish and its a want and not a need.

I am very glad you made that post Bob.

Thank you Peter for all the very positive comments that you have made all over the forum. I think it is a dramatic illustration of how much people can learn from every situation, if they are not out looking for flaws, but are looking for something that will help them personally to grow more spiritually.
